Loons

Each year I travel to Canada to enjoy photography, fishing and spending time with close friends. During the beautiful crisp Canadian mornings I love to venture out at dawn and set up my cameras on the front of my fishing boat or Kayak and travel to one of the many secluded coves on Big Gull Lake looking for loons. Once I am lucky enough to spot one of these beautiful creatures I slowly approach using the boats electric trolling motor, as to not disturb the birds or alter their daily life. The birds get used to my presence over the time it takes to painstakingly approach them at a very slow speed. After some initial wariness they allow me to get close and even become more curious about my presence at times providing me wonderful photographic opportunities capturing them flapping their wings, fishing, swimming right next to the boat and giving me many different looks and exceptional opportunities. Photographing loons has become one of my favorite past times on these trips watching their behaviors and having them get comfortable sharing their environment.
